Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 1/4" x 22 1/4" Beautiful 18th century celestial map depicting the Copernican solar system with the six planets known at the time, surrounded by the astrological constellations. In the lower left corner, a solar eclipse on May 12, 1906 is portrayed projecting onto a terrestrial globe showing the northern hemisphere, with California depicted as an island. In the lower right corner, Urania, the goddess of astronomy demonstrates the Copernicus system, the Tychonic system, and the Ptolemaic system, as well as a lunar eclipse. This map was in Atlas Coelestis a collaboration between Homann and Doppelmayr. In excellent condition. Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750) was an astronomer, cartographer, and a professor of mathematics from Nuremberg. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century, including being geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.
