[LGBTQ][Drag][Cross-Dressing] Archive of nine drag queen "Coronation" programs from the California Imperial Court System, one of the oldest and largest LGBTQ organizations in the world. 1976 1981. A vibrant archive documenting the drag pageant culture of California s LGBTQ+ communities during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Comprising nine original event programs from regional chapters of the Imperial Court System, including Long Beach, Monterey, and Stockton, this collection captures a critical period of queer cultural expression, political organization, and community building prior to the AIDS crisis. The Imperial Court System, founded in 1965 by drag performer and activist José Sarria, was a cornerstone of mid- to late 20th-century LGBTQ+ life, combining theatrical events with mutual aid and political organizing. These booklets, produced for events such as "Closet Ball 77," "The Rocky Horror Coronation" (1979), "A Spring Renaissance" (1980), and "Ziegfeld 81", feature illustrations, ads, event schedules, contestant names, and messages from reigning monarchs like Empress Dorothy Big Mouth, Empress IX Sophie, and Emperor James Michael V. Several include witty humor ("Why is everyone calling me 'Lush' instead of 'Lucious'?"), while others offer poignant expressions of solidarity: "To my Emperor, Georgia, I must say it ain t always been easy, but we made it " (Sophie IX, 1981). The 1976 Long Beach pamphlet features ads for Empress candidates, including a full-page image of Louella Mother smoking in drag, sponsored by "Queen Mother III of Los Angeles." These ephemera illustrate the emergence of complex regional queer networks, with references to the San Francisco Tavern Guild, Operation Concern, and hospitality rooms run by sister courts throughout California. All items are saddle-stapled pamphlets, most printed offset with hand-drawn illustrations. Minor toning, rubbing, and scattered stains to the 1978 "Old Fashion Christmas" program, some handling creases, but overall well-preserved. Very good condition. A scarce collection of early drag coronation material from the California chapter of the Imperial Court, offering rich documentation of queer performance and community support in an era of emerging visibility and resistance in the LGBTQ community.
