[LGBTQ] [Drag] Archive of Finocchio s, the first American Nightclub in San Francisco. A scarce archive of six items from Finocchio s from the 1940s-50s, the landmark drag nightclub on 506 Broadway in San Francisco, long recognized as one of the earliest and most influential stages for American drag culture. The centerpiece of this collection is a rare large-format performance booklet featuring a striking illustrated cover by drag performer and artist Li-Kar, along with interior photographs of leading female impersonators in glamorous costumes. Unlike the smaller programs and drink menus that appear more frequently on the market, this oversized booklet represents a deluxe variant intended as a showcase piece for the club s star performers, an artifact we have not previously handled in any of our Finocchio s holdings. Measurements range from 8" x 11" to 4" x 6". Also included is a small blue promotional drink menu with illustrated exterior and performer portraits within, as well as four vibrant souvenir postcards capturing the revue cast in colorful staged tableaux, sequined costumes, and chorus-line arrangements. These items together chart the continuity of Finocchio s across several decades of its 63-year run, preserving the atmosphere of spectacle and gender play that made the club legendary. Founded in 1936, Finocchio s began as a Depression-era speakeasy before flourishing into an internationally known cabaret, billed under the slogan: "The most interesting women are not women at all." Its stage became a proving ground for celebrated performers such as Walter Hart, Lucian Phelps or "the male Sophie Tucker", and Aleshia Brevard, who would later publish one of the earliest transgender autobiographies in the United States. Unlike many entertainment venues of its era, Finocchio s regularly showcased performers of color and attracted diverse audiences, including Hollywood stars like Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra, at a time when queer nightlife was often hidden. Closing in 1999, Finocchio s remains the longest-running female impersonation show in the world, and its legacy continues to shape the history of American drag, LGBTQ performance, and nightlife. Some minor edgewear, images and material remain sharp and clean. Overall very good condition. A scarce collection and an exceptional survivor of America s most famous drag club, preserving its pioneering role in gender performance and queer cultural history.
