Clover Hill Editions London, 1981. 2 volumes._____DESCRIPTION: No. LXXVIII of CV copies of the deluxe edition with a separate portfolio of wood engravings. 32 x 26 cm (Vol. 1). Vol. 1 with 96 leaves (pages) of engravings, the majority of wood and copper engravings expertly printed by the Rampant Lions Press directly from the original wood blocks and copper plates on Barcham Green hand-made paper watermarked "Clover Hill". Bound in tan quarter-morocco over dark green buckram-covered boards, 5 raised bands, gilt stamped titling on two green morocco panels, top edge gilt. Vol. 2 is a separate buckram cloth-covered clamshell box containing a set of the 96 plates printed on japon paper accompanied by a 7-page pictorial index of engravings and dry points printed by offset. 9 copper engravings and one dry-point printed from the original copper plates in a separate folder. All housed in a custom green cloth-covered two-compartment slipcase. All components of this set made by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Book is protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper._____CONDITION: Volume 1 is in fine condition throughout. Volume 2 (clamshell box with separate portfolio) had a tiny bump at one corner, contents fine. Slipcase has a tiny bump along top edge of spine, otherwise fine._____DISCUSSION: Volume 1 also contains a 22 page essay 'A Survey of the Engravings of David Jones' by Douglas Cleverdon followed by a detailed list and description of all illustrations. Volume 2 has a 7-page pictorial Index of Engravings, pamphlet stitched. This is probably the finest, most detailed survey of any of the great twentieth century wood engravers, expertly printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. The quality of the hand-made papers and the printing directly from the wooden blocks and copper plates sets this edition apart. For any collector interested in the history of twentieth century wood engraving, this set is a must. NOTE: This is an extremely heavy set and additional shipping cost will be required domestically.
