This first edition, first printing of Charles Dickens' third novel, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, was published in 1839 by Chapman and Hall in London. This novel, written while Dickens was still finishing Oliver Twist, harshly critiqued the English educational system, portraying the bleak realities of institutions like Dotheboys Hall. The narrative also displayed the systemic cruelty and economic exploitation rampant in Victorian England, seen most clearly in the manipulations of Nicholas' uncle, Ralph Nickleby. However, the novel is seen as Dickens' most theatrical work, with hope and comfort displayed in the characters of Smike and the Cheeryble brothers. The book features 39 illustrations by Phiz, whose artistry has become nearly synonymous with Dickens first editions. This edition presents all known textual points identifying it as a first issue. Octavo (8vo), single volume. Very Good condition; half leather over marbled boards shows mild to moderate rubbing around the edges and on the boards, but the hinges are secure and the text block is tight, though pages show moderate foxing, particularly on plates.
