Safford (1837-1890), a native of Athens, Georgia, was a missionary educator of women in Soochow (Suzhou), China. She wrote or translated a dozen or more books and pamphlets on hygiene, physiology, and the word of God, in a style that simple women could understand, and was the editor of the interdenominational magazine Woman s Work in the Far East (see her entry in: Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions, 1998). Based on the original work of Xiang Liu (77 BCE - 6 BCE), this was Safford's last book and published posthumously.
