Simon & Schuster was originally going to publish this novel in the traditional hardcover format but just 3 months prior to the book s release, they decided to cancel the contract due to the graphic nature of the book s contents. The CEO of the publishing house even went as far as saying it was, an error in judgement to associate itself with a book of questionable taste. Sonny Mehta, then editor of the Random House imprint, Vintage Books, published the book in softcover format for the first time on March 6th, 1991. Ellis and Mehta both received threats following the release of the book, which was immediately controversial for its graphic violence, leading to its banning or censoring in several countries. The film, released in 2000 starring Christian Bale received favorable reviews and helped revive interest in the novel and help rehabilitate its image. . Picador of London would release a hardcover version of this novel 7 years later in 1998, however the true first printing is this US first edition published many years earlier. As such, it is difficult to find these copies in fresh condition and this copy is a genuine example where the condition sets it apart. NF, appearing unread, with some typical page aging and toning. Very light edge wear. Covers now protected in a plastic mylar.
