Textually complete*** Overall Condition: antiquarian VG+ PROVENANCE: From the Virgil Collection of Craig Kallendorf (1954 - 2023), who owned the largest private collection of antiquarian Virgil works (1,150 editions, not including Incunable books) in the world. Only a handful of prominent institutions like the British Library had larger collections. Eighth-nine of the books in his collection were the only known surviving copies, 71 only had one other known copy. He worked closely with Princeton University in helping to assemble, supplement and catalog its Junius Spencer Morgan Virgil collection. Craig Kallendorf was Professor of English and Classics at Texas A&M University. He was the author or editor of 27 books and more than 170 articles, book chapters, and reference work entries. ABOUT THE BOOK Published in 1664 in Paris by Estienne Loyson. Second edition, as stated on title page. Two volumes bound into one. Text in French and Latin on facing pages. Bound in contemporary French mottled full calf fine binding: ruled in gilt; spine features five raised spine bands with six gilt tooled compartments with double bordering with corner ornamentation - compartment two with title lettering and the other compartments with a fleur-de-lis; all edges speckled with red dots. Octavo, 6.5" x 4", [12] 234, [4], 240 pp., original blank. Each part with a double title page. The engraved title pages for each part feature an ornamental border with 12 beautiful miniature woodcut vignettes. The secondary title pages with a woodcut printer device. Twelve double-page copper engraved plates, one for each book of the Aeneid. Head- and tail-pieces for each short commentary preceding every book of the Aeneid and woodcut header scrolls for each Aeneid book. Decorated initials. ABOUT THE PUBLISHER Estienne Loyson was a prominent figure in the Parisian publishing scene of the 17th century. He is known for publishing various books, including those on heraldry, emblems, and religious texts. CONDITION REPORT: VG+ Missing some blank flyleaves. With original rear blank. Exterior is VERY GOOD for being over 350 years old. Darkened leather. Square spine, firm hinges and joints. Rubbed boards and extremities, slightly rubbed spine. Slightly bumped corners. Some slight leather loss at foot of front joint. Leather is dry with some areas of age cracking. Top edge slightly darkened. Interior- VG+ 17th century condition. A few pages with some small margin tears or chips. Some pages with overly trimmed page margins by the binder. Some grubbiness to endpapers. Some paper loss to second title page which was aggressively inked. (No loss of text or image). Text block generally quite clean given its age. Very few areas with a spot of foxing or two. Part I with toned pages and part II with white or lightly toned pages. No damp staining or marginalia. Multiple bent page corners and the infrequent smudge or other sign of handling. Plates in excellent condition overall. Former owner writing and a bookplate featuring Albrecht Dürer's woodcut, "The Small Triumphal Car or the Burgundian Marriage", (originally created circa 1518) on front pastedown. Rear blank with Kallendorf's ex libris sticker on the FFEP. All in all, a scarce complete copy in a higher-grade collectible condition in fine French binding well over 300-years-old.
