"Such Conduct from a Wife was Too Much to Let Pass Unnoticed" [Broadside]. [Execution]. Jones, John [d.1822]. Horrid Murders! Confession & Dying Declaration of Iohn Jones, Who was Executed at Lincoln, On the 24th of April, 1822, For the Murder of His Wife, Six Children and Two Servants! Boroughbridge [Yorkshire]: S. Kirkby, Printer, [1822]. 12-1/2" x 5-1/2" (31.7 x 14 cm) broadside mounted to 13" x 6-1/4" (33.1 x 16.1 cm) backing sheet, text in single column below headline and woodcut vignette of coffin with the initials "JJ." Light soiling and creasing, text faded (somewhat significantly in places) due to print quality, tiny hole to main text block without loss to legibility, small clean tear to right edge of broadside not affecting text, early owner signature (of David Robertson, with annotation noting price paid) to left of vignette. Rare. $1,850. * After a night of hard drinking at the Buffalo Tavern, Jones returned home to a blow on the head from his wife. Thinking that "such conduct from a wife was too much to let pass unnoticed," he "determined to have revenge on her" and picked up an axe "like a butcher going to slaughter." He killed his wife first and then moved on to his six children and the two servants in the house. He was executed for the murders on April 24, 1822. This imprint is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies listed on OCLC or Library Hub. OCLC locates 1 copy of a broadside with a nearly identical title and a different imprint (Oxford University).
