DESCRIPTION: Octavo (8vo.), 8 1/4 x 6 inches (210 x 147 mm), 296 pp. One of 250 copies on paper. Printed in Golden type in black and red on Batchelor hand-made Flower paper. Beautifully illustrated by William Morris with woodcut title page, first page (borders), printer's device, and numerous 10 line and smaller initial capitals. Strikingly bound by Gruel of Paris in contemporary full tan calf, rebacked, raised bands on spine, leather spine label. Front board stamped in elaborate bas-relief design, cloth brocade pastedowns and endpapers with floral motif, all edges gilt. Book is protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper.____CONDITION: Interior (text pages) fine. Leather binding VG+ with light rubbing to the binding edges and inside the covers adjacent to the inner hinges. Text block firm and square and all hinges intact. Small area of darkening along the front edge of front cover. ____DISCUSSION: Although overlooked today, Robert Herrick was an important 17th century lyric poet. His love poems are characterized by "directness of speech, crisp lines, with clear and simple presentation of thought." Swineburne proclaimed him to be "one of the finest English lyric poets, with spare and epigrammatic lines in the best classical manner."
