London: Jarrolds, 1932. First UK Edition, first printing. Near Fine. lacking dust jacket. Very slight sunning to the orange cloth at the backstrip, else a superb copy. Runyon's best-known work, a collection of stories set amid the gamblers, bookies, showgirls and other denizens of Broadway. His stories have formed the basis for many films. Abe Burrows, Jo Swerling and Frank Loesser adapted the stories and characters, along with their swagger and exaggerated patois, into the wonderful musical with the same title, generally considered one of the very best musicals in the history of American theatre. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, with help from Ben Hecht, wrote and directed the stylized 1955 film version, which featured striking set and costume designs. Stage greats Vivian Blaine, Stubby Kaye and others reprised their roles for the film, joined by Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons. Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Jarrolds, London, 1932. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First UK Edition (first printing). 8vo. 288pp. thirteen short stories including 'Blood Pressure', one of the two stories that formed the basis of the celebrated musical (the other story, 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown', was not published until the following year).
