[Detective mystery] This double Christmas holiday issue contains the FIRST APPEARANCE of 'The Adventure of The Dying Detective' by Doyle, illustrated by Walter Paget, later published in 'His Last Bow'. Original issue magazine format, approx. 9.5 x 6.5 inches with pictorial covers, illustrated throughout, all advertisement leaves present, tipped-in colour advertising insert at rear. Contents clean, covers with some edge wear and rubbing, chip/loss to foot of front panel near spine. A very good example of a rare Sherlockian issue. Walter Stanley Paget (1863-1935), the youngest of three famous artist brothers, who had a keen sense of period costume for his figures, illustrated works by Robert Louis Stevenson, Daniel Defoe, Walter Scott and Thomas Hardy. He was originally chosen to illustrate 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' (1891 onward), but through an unfortunate misunderstanding the position fell to his brother Sidney, who went on to illustrate thirty eight Holmes stories, using Walter's face as the model for the great detective! Walter finally got to produce four Holmes drawings for 'The Adventure of the Dying Detective' (1913). DeWaal 228. Green & Gibson A14. BMC No.261, p62-73 'Collecting The Strand'. Graham Greene and Dorothy Glover; Victorian Detective Fiction (1966). BMC No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'. See also Cooper & Pike [p115-119], Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction, Hardwicke; Complete Guide to Sherlock Holmes (1986), Keating; Sherlock Holmes and his World (1979).
