8vo. Rebound in full brown pebble-grain calf with gilt spine lettering. viii, 534pp, (2pp). Near fine. Text block lightly, evenly age toned. Attractive first edition, in handsome mid-20th century rebind, of this chronicle of the western portions of the War of 1812 by the Kentucky legislator and historian (1784-1849) who served as that state's seventh lieutenant governor (1824-28). Howes notes, "For scope and authenticity rivalled only by Dawson's 'Life of Harrison.' Material was supplied by two of the ablest commanders, Harrison and Shelby," while AII Kentucky maintains the text was composed by McAfee and revised by James Buchanan. Title continues: "Comprising a Full Account of All the Transactions in That Quarter, From the Commencement of Hostilities at Tippecanoe, to the Termination of the Contest at New Orleans on the Return of Peace." This sharp copy does bear the added leaf at the close in which General James Winchester, "with injured feelings," complains that the book is inaccurate because of omissions. Very scarce. AII KENTUCKY 612. GRAFF 2568. HOWES M 9. JONES 781. RADER 2270. SABIN 42929. STREETER 1076. THOMSON 738.
