[Civil War] Bound Collection of General Orders and Circulars War Department 1866, published by the War Department, Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., not paginated, 7 1/5 x 5 inches. Bound in three quarters leather over brown pebbled cloth. Gilt title on spine. Leather very worn and dry especially at spine. Front board hanging by threads. Interior is very clean. Not paginated but estimated to have over 700 pages. Good condition. Famous collection of General Orders and Circulars issued throughout 1866 reflecting the end of the Civil War. Includes 100 numbered General Orders (although several were never issued) plus 37 Circulars. Most famous General Order from this bound set is General Order No. 1 announcing the Abolition of Slavery. Also includes General Order No. 55 providing for National Cemeteries, plus General Orders No. 71 and 92 which detail post-Civil War promotions. A quick glance of General Army personnel listed in General Order No. 71 includes Grant, Sherman, Rosecrans, Hooker, Doubleday, Crook, Emery, Custer, Warren plus hundreds more. This order runs 349pp. General Order No. 92 creates two additional regiments of Cavalry, the 7th and 8th with George A. Custer appointed Lieutenant Colonel. Included are several Presidential proclamations by Andrew Johnson. Leather binding includes previous owner's name at base, T.J. Haines, C.S. U.S.A. An essential addition to any Civil War library.
