1 pp. 8 x 12 1/2 inches. From the War office, May 6th, 1790. Knox to John Nicholson, Esq., Comptroller General: "Acknowledging the receipt of yours of the 28th April last stating the case of one John Dixon a Pensioner of the United States residing in the state of Pennsylvania. The necessary arrangements shall be made ["to make" crossed through] respecting a provision for him." Signed H. Knox. The letter appears to be in a secretarial hand, while the correction ['respecting a' in place of 'to make'] appears to be in Knox's hand. Henry Knox (1750-1806), Founding Father of the United States, was a bookseller, military officer, and politician. He was the 1st United States Secretary of War (1785-1794) at the time of this letter. John Nicholson (1757-1800) was a financier, comptroller general of Pennsylvania (1782-1794), anti-Federalist, and a land speculator who was impeached for mismanaging Pennsylvania state funds for his own use in 1793, but was acquitted. Very good, two horizontal folds remained on verso, top and bottom edges a bit ragged, chipped, minor tears.
