[Florida] [Natural Disaster] The aftermath of the 1926 Miami Hurricane. Archive of 21 sepia photographs, circa 1926, Miami, Florida. Each measuring 2.5" x 3". Several with handwritten captions in ink along the lower margins reading "Miami, Fla. 1926" or "Coral Gables, Fla. 1926." A compelling photographic record of destruction following the catastrophic 1926 Miami Hurricane, one of the most powerful and economically devastating storms in U.S. history. The images vividly capture the aftermath across Miami and Coral Gables: capsized and grounded yachts scattered along the coast, demolished homes and hotels, palm trees stripped bare, and scenes of wreckage engulfed in smoke. Several photographs depict overturned steamships and fishing vessels lodged inland, their hulls wedged against toppled palms, while others show collapsed masonry buildings and piles of lumber marking once-thriving residential districts. The dense concentration of images around downtown Miami, with recognizable mid-1920s architecture visible in the background, situates the photographer near Biscayne Bay and the Miami River, areas hardest hit by the storm s 150-mph winds and 10-foot storm surge. The 1926 Miami Hurricane made landfall on September 18, 1926, killing at least 372 people and leaving more than 25,000 homeless. The storm effectively ended the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, collapsing speculative real-estate ventures and plunging the region into economic despair years before the Great Depression. Few visual records of the event survive making this vernacular archive an invaluable primary source for the study of early 20th-century disaster photography, urban resilience, and the visual culture of American natural catastrophe. Light curling and mild toning to prints, some with minor corner wear and handling marks. Ink captions legible throughout; images retain strong contrast and clarity. Overall very good condition.
