First Edition -- Sept. 10, 1900, with no later dates or editions showing. Original black endpapers are lovely. This copy is datelined 1901 Finchampstead (Berkshire) and we believe it was the copy of Sir John Watson, VC (1829-1919). (Please see scans.) Lt. Watson, then with the first Punjab Cavalry, won the Victoria Cross Nov. 14, 1857 for actions at Lucknow, India, during the Indian Mutiny. Watson was promoted General in 1891. This copy once belonged to the John Custer Kittleson (1876-1922) Memorial Collection of military books of the Minneapolis Public Library, but shows no ex-library effluvia save for a bookplate to front pastedown. Original folding two-color map of Ian Hamilton's march from Bloemfontein to Pretoria remains firmly attached near the back. 409 pp. including Appendx followed by 34 pp. publisher's ads, including works of Stevenson, Haggard, and Doyle (though no Sherlock) and beginning with full-page ads for each of Churchill's four earlier books, "The River War" being reported in its third thousand and "The Malakand Field Force" in its seventh thousand.
