DESCRIPTION: Small folio size 14 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches (373 x 217 mm), 120 pp. Limited edition No. 81 of 300 copies. Binding quarter vermillion red goatskin over grey paper-covered boards by Zaehnsdorf, gilt titling to spine, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Printed letterpress in 14pt Monotype Bembo and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. Illustrated by Colin Paynton with 33 miniature wood engravings in black, yellow, read, and blue with borders of various geometric patterns, printed directly from the original wood blocks. An additional loose wodcut by Paynton is laid in, signed and numbered. Prospectus included. Designed and printed by David Esselmont. Protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper and housed in a grey cloth covered slipcase. CONDITION; Near fine (NF). Faint spotting (foxing) along the front and bottom edges of the text block (see photo), text pages and illustrations unaffected. Otherwise, etxremely fine condition. Spine NOT faded as is usually seen. Slipcase in fine condition. DISCUSSION: Giraldus Cambrensis or Gerald of Wales traveled through Wales accompanied by Baldwin, Archbishop of Canterbury, to preach the Third Crusade. This is a new, fresh translation from the original Latin which enables the reader to take a time machine back into 12th century medieval Wales. Of obvious historical interest.
