A late-18th-century Swiss printing of this accessible dental and hygienic manual by à tienne Bourdet (c.1722â "1789), one of the foremost French dentists of the Enlightenment and Chirurgien-Dentiste du Roi under Louis XV and XVI. Drawing from his more technical Recherches sur toutes les Parties de lâ Art du Dentiste (1781), Bourdet here offers a clear, concise handbook on oral hygiene, tooth preservation, and preventive care. Topics include the causes of tooth decay, halitosis, and gum disease; daily cleaning regimens; artificial teeth; and the moral responsibility of parents to care for their childrenâ s dental health. Written in an elegant and didactic tone, the text reveals the intersection of Enlightenment medicine, anatomy, and social propriety. The appended treatise, Lâ Art de Soigner les Pieds, extends Bourdetâ s anatomical expertise to the treatment of foot ailments â " corns, calluses, bunions, and nail deformities â " showing his interest in practical medicine for everyday well-being. A fine example of late-18th-century health literature aimed at the educated layperson. No illustrations, as issued. Typography is crisp and attractive, typical of Lausanne presses catering to a French-reading audience. This copy bears no modern ownership markings or inscriptions, but an earlier copy you shared (in calf) had a dental provenance label â " an interesting parallel to note for professional collectors. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in a handsome modern quarter cloth and marbled boards, with red buckram spine and gilt-lettered morocco label; marbled paper in rich shades of burgundy, orange, and black. A solid, attractive rebinding that preserves the text block cleanly. Internally very good to near fine, with only faint toning and scattered mild foxing; paper crisp and margins wide. Overall- near fine.
