This is a collection of 12 books by - and one book about - MATTHEW ARNOLD. The collection had been owned by professor Chilson H. Leonard, Instructor in English at Phillips Exeter Academy from 1932-1967. Leonard had corresponded with prominent writers of the day such as Willa Cather and Kenneth Roberts. A signed, handwritten letter by him has been tipped in at the front of one of the volumes. The books have been used/read and have pen & pencil underlines, notations, and markings. God and The Bible has a small cloth tear at the bottom of the spine. Mixed Essays has blue ink stains at the outer edge of pages 397-469. Letters has cracks at the front and rear hinges resulting in the covers being a bit shaky; a partially removed bookplate is affixed on the front pastedown; a personal library that has been blacked-out is affixed at the bottom of the spine. A neatly written inscription has been tipped in at the front of Essays in Criticism - Third Series.
