Published in 1892 by Chatto & Windus in London, Eighteenth Century Vignettes is Austin Dobson's signed first edition, one of only 250 large-paper copies issued, this being no. 165. A literary and cultural retrospective, the book contains Dobson's historical sketches on notable 18th-century personalities such as Richard Steele, William Hogarth, and Oliver Goldsmith, among others. The volume is finely printed in quarto format and includes seven engraved portraits protected by original tissue guards. Subjects range from Gray's personal library to Captain Coram's charitable works, Hanway's travels, and various corners of literary London. Dobson's distinctive stylistic blend contributes historical interest without sacrificing narrative precision. Bound in original quarter vellum over boards, this example retains its gilt spine titling. Very Good; the vellum shows some rubbing and minor stains, and the corners are gently scuffed, yet the structure remains solid and the text block is clean throughout. Collation: 261 pp. Illustrations: 7 engraved portraits with tissue guards. Edition: First edition, signed and limited, no. 165 of 250. Format: (4to), single volume. #29507 PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
