This is a rare collection of the publication "A CLUB CORNER" - Published by The Saturday Morning Club of Hartford (Connecticut). There are four issues in all: March 1892 (Vol. I No. 3), November 1892 (Vol. II No. 1), January 1893 (Vol. II No. 2), and May 1893 (Vol. II No. 4). The issues contain poems, summaries of Club lectures and discussions, letters from readers, book reviews, articles on literary topics (such as "Some Modern Writers - Rudyard Kipling and Others," "James Fenimore Cooper," "Characteristics Which Make a Poet Popular"), lecture schedules, news about other clubs (including "The Whittier Club of Haverhill, MA"), news bits ("Jots and Tittles") and more. The issues measure 11" and 11 1/4" tall x 7 1/2" wide. Three issues contain 12 pages; one issue contains 14 pages. "The Saturday Morning Club" was a 19th-century women's intellectual and community group in Boston founded in 1871 by Julia Ward Howe (author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"). It hosted prominent speakers (including Mark Twain), discussed academic subjects, and held theatrical performances. Inspired by Howe's daughter, Maud, the Club sought to be a reasonable alternative to the sewing clubs and debutante balls that molded the lives of middle- and upper-class young girls. The Club instead offered a broad range of intelligent, useful, and imaginative activities to enrich their lives and occupy their free time. Condition: The covers and pages of all issues are securely attached. Some of the covers have light soiling. The May, 1893 issue has a stain at the upper-outer cover corners. The March, 1892 issue has a mild, vertical crease down the center. Nice interiors - the pages are clean with the exception of the March, 1892 issue which has a few tiny markings in ink. Overall the collection is in Good+ condition.
