First edition, a one act adaptation of Wexley's three act play which had been issued the year before in 1930. Stapled printed gray wrappers. A little toning and tiny tears on the slightly yapped wrappers, very good or better. Inscribed by the author: "To Barrett H. Clark with profound affection and thanks. John Wexley." Barrett H. Clark was an exceptionally important figure in modern American drama: aside from authoring and translating many plays, he served as the longtime literary editor for the drama publisher Samuel French, as well as director of the Drama League of America. He helped guide playwrights, such as Eugene O Neill and Maxwell Anderson, and encouraged American dramatists to tell real stories of working-class people, using language derived from everyday life. The three act version of this play was the basis for two films, the 1932 Samuel Bischoff version with Howard Phillips and Preston Foster; and the 1959 Howard W. Koch version with Mickey Rooney. Wexley also wrote or co-wrote several screenplays including *Angels With Dirty Faces* and *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*. This version is very uncommon, especially with this kind of association. *OCLC* locates ten copies of the one act version.
