Collar. *** Brittan was a widely known proponent of spiritualism and always eager to publicly put forth his views on the subject. Hanson was a Congregational minister in Hartford, CT who did not believe in spiritualism. In this book is recorded a gentlemanly debate, in its entirety, between Professor Brittan and Dr. Hanson. The debate was held at Touro Hall in Hartford, CT on March 3, 1858. The debate centered around the following question - Do the Spirits of departed human beings continue to manifest their presence, power, and intelligence to those who still remain on earth, and in the corporeal form? *** Included with the book is a small, loose printed brochure titled "Important Medical Discoveries," by S. B. Brittan, M. D. It advertises a book by Brittan titled "Man and His Relations," gives the address of his office and the medical services offered, promotes a cure-all medicine called Spirit of the Pine, and displays favorable testimonials from prominent American journals. *** The book comes with a clear mylar protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound by E. Walker & Sons of New York City in ¾ dark brown morocco and brown cloth boards. The spine has five (5) raised bands with gilt devices in compartments, and gilt lettering. All edges of the text block are gilt. The front free end paper has an embossed seal for the bindery. The covers have light soil, moderate wear, a few lumps in cloth of front cover. Joints are rubbed. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding with some light to moderate foxing of front and back blanks. VG condition. *** 9 inches tall by 5.75 inches.
