Postcard sent by Scottish artist William Watson Peploe (1869~1933) younger brother of Samuel John Peploe (1871~1935). Watercolour to front of the card presumably by William Peploe. William Peploe exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and is represented in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Kirkcaldy Art Gallery. William's career was over­shadowed by that of his younger brother Samuel John Peploe (1871~1935), who also visited Iona every summer from 1919 to 1935, the year of his death. Inscription to rear: 'Pigeons' Cave; Iona. With best Easter greetings to Ethel Gorton from Willie Peploe' --- Ethel Gorton (1899~1966), the recipient of the card, was the mother of production designer Assheton Gorton (1930~2014), who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for the film 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' and was the BAFTA nominated art director for Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 film 'Blow-Up'. Coincidentally?, Samuel John Peploe's grandchildren, Clare & Mark Peploe, also worked in the film industry and also worked on 'Blow-Up'. Card measures 9 x 14 cm. Some marking to image surface with some discolouration and staining to rear. --- Pigeons cave, also known as St. Martin's Cave is on the south east coat of Iona, a small island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. A half kilometer north of the marble quarry, Pigeon's Cave opens out onto a small stone beach occupied by doves and shags. The cave was visited often by Henry Graham who wrote The Antiquities of Iona (1850).
