In this classic work, first published in 1837, Irving focused on a single memorable figure - an army officer and fur trader who may also have been an American spy tracking British ambitions in the far country - to reveal the flavor of frontier life in the Rockies and beyond. Octavo, two volumes: xxvi, [2], 339, [1, blank] pp. + xii, [2], 237, [1, blank] pp. Each volume with a frontispiece and 13 full-page plates, all photogravures or photo engravings, with red-captioned tissue guards, after photographs and illustrations, as well as a decorated title page, printed in maroon and light blue, and decorative page borders, printed in light blue, by Margaret Armstrong. The first volume includes a folding map, a photo engraving printed in black and pink. In the publisher's ivory enameled basket-weave cloth binding designed by Margaret Armstrong, with beveled boards; maroon and gilt-stamped ruled borders and ornamental frame, gilt-stamped pictograph device field, and maroon-stamped knotwork frame with rifle devices and titling on the front panel; and maroon and gilt-stamped ruled and ornamental head and tail bands, maroon and gilt-stamped feather and arrowhead devices, and gilt-stamped titling on the spine.
