San Francisco: Grabhorn-Hoyem, 1967. 4to, 127 pp. Text in alternating lines of black and red. Quarter white goatskin vellum and blue cloth boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Bookplate. Hint of fading to board edges, fine within with the original prospectus laid in. § Edition of 225 copies. A new translation by John F. Crawford and Andrew Hoyem printed interlinearly with the the Middle English text of the original poem, followed by a commentary. The Peal was composed in 14th century England and survived in a single manuscript, now held in the British Museum. The four illustrations from the original manuscript are here reproduced in full color by linoleum block process. A beautiful rendering of this medieval visionary poem.
