First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "May Allah give you peace and may you live forever! With deepest salaams Lowell Thomas." Thomas coined the phrase "Lawrence of Arabia" and transformed Lawrence into one of the most enduring heroic figures of the First World War. Thomas (1892-1981) met Lawrence in Jerusalem in February 1918 while working for the US War Department as a publicist. With his cameraman, Harry Chase, he spent two weeks with Lawrence, capturing reels of film to create the innovative multimedia lecture-performance "With Allenby in Palestine and Lawrence in Arabia", later shortened to "With Lawrence in Arabia". Premiered in 1919, by 1924 it had been seen by more than four million people across the English-speaking world. O'Brien E006. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece and 62 plates. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover blocked in black and blue. This copy is in a jacket issued with a later Star Books edition of the work. Front free endpaper with traces of red ink inscription, now mostly erased. Light wear and marking to binding, inner hinges tender, rear inner hinge sometime crudely repaired with adhesive tape, contents toned: a very good copy.
