First British edition, retaining a bright example of the dust jacket from the Colonial Library issue. The binding is from the third issue, bound in green cloth rather than red. The novel was first printed in the Saturday Evening Post from 22 April to 27 May 1939, and the US edition precedes the UK one by a week. A contemporary review declared that "What Zeus is to the Olympians, so is Uncle Fred. to the members of the Wodehouse mythology" (Truth, p. 271). The titular character first appears in "Uncle Fred Flits By" (Young Men in Spats, 1936). McIlvaine A61b (3). Truth, 1 September 1939. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in brown, publisher's device to rear board in brown. With dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Endpapers toned; jacket bright, edges rubbed and slightly chipped, a couple of 2-2.5 cm tears to lower edge, pale damp stain to rear panel, unclipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
