Paul Marcoy. Travels in South America from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. NY: Scribner, Armstrong, & Co., 1875, 1st. American edition, 1st. printing, 2 volumes, xii, (viii), 525 pp. / viii, (viii), 496 pp. *** A very scarce set chronicling Marcoys explorations through some of the remotest parts of Andean and tropical South America. There are eleven (11) litho. maps on ten (10) sheets, all but one large scale, that show geographical details and contain comments on geographical features and Indians observed along the route. With 525 wood-cut illustrations, both full-page and in text, including a frontis. in each volume. One of the best descriptions to come out of the 19th. Century. This set is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Rebound in ¾ dark brown leatherette with brown and red marbled paper boards, gilt rule and lettering on spines. Matching marbled end papers and new blanks. The contents are complete. Scattered finger soil and foxing throughout, much of it confined to margins. The maps are in very good condition with occasional finger soil and light spotting. Some short closed tears on a few pages have been repaired with clear archival tape. *** 12 inches tall by 9 inches
