Image measures 12 3/4" x 10 1/2" This classic 19th century shows the lower portion of Manhattan, south of 45th St. Parts of Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Jersey City, Hoboken, and Downtown Brooklyn can be seen, as well as Governor's Island and Ellis Island. Ferry lines are shown as well as railroads, parks, hospitals, and important civic buildings. This map was included as Plate 19 for the 1964 of Mitchell's New General Atlas, updated to include political wards. Samuel Augustus Mitchell Sr. (1792-1868) was one of the leaders in American cartography of the 19th century and pioneered the conversion of engraved map plates to more affordable lithographic plates. His son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. continued his father's successful mapmaking and publishing business, and was one of the most prolific and renowned 19th century American publishers.
