First edition, second state, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Albert Edward Doyle, with love from the clever author, Sept. 14 1933". Betjeman also added a drawing to the inscription, presumably of the recipient. Betjeman played an unusually active role in the production of Ghastly Good Taste and designed the mixed modern type layout used for the front board himself. Albert Edward Doyle (1886-1962) was an assistant editor in charge of production for the Architectural Review during the 1930s. He may have worked alongside Betjeman, who was an assistant editor for the periodical from 1930 to 1934. Correspondence between Betjeman and Doyle is held at the University of Victoria, Canada. Peterson A2a. Octavo. Folding illustration to rear (107 x 18.2 cm) by Peter Fleetwood-Hesketh, errata slip tipped in between pp. xii and 1. Original blue cloth-backed pink paper boards, titles to front board and spine label in black, with spare label tipped in to rear pastedown, bottom edge untrimmed. Generally a little toned and rubbed, extremities bumped with occasional spots of wear, label previously reattached, scrape across fore edge: a very good copy.
