36 FINE ETCHINGS BY MONZIES AFTER PILLE, ILLUSTRATING THE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE. A COMPLETE LARGE-PAPER SET (comprising both the first and second series) BEFORE ALL LETTERS ON EXTREMELY FINE JAPANESE PAPER. While this suite was originally published to accompany Victor Hugo's translation of Shakespeare's works (1875-1880), it was eagerly sought after by bibliophiles and print collectors on both sides of the Channel, for both French and English editions. This large-paper set on Japanese paper has huge margins, measuring 30 x 21 cm, and thus would have been appropriate for insertion into deluxe sets of Shakespeare's works. But the set we offer is pristine, having never been pressed into service in that way. Loose sheets. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. Unbound large-paper sets before letters are extremely rare.
