Original 1821 hand-drawn & lettered map with pink, yellow, grey and green washes: A MAP of The Two Estates called DIDLEYS & THRUCKSTONE Court In the Parishes of Thruckstone St Deveraux Allensmoor Kingstone & Township of Trevill In the County of HEREFORD belonging to Thos Artemidorus Russell Esqr of Cheshunt Park. H. Crawter & Sons. 1821. The map executed by the firm of H. Crawter & Sons who acted as surveyors, valuers and agents to various manors in Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties from about 1610 to 1936. The firm existed as Crawter and Sons, Crawter and Moore, Crawter and Death and Crawter and Latta. Thomas Artemidorus Russell (c.1775~1858) of Cheshunt Park Mansion, Cheshunt Park, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England, was the great, great, great great grandson of Oliver Cromwell through his mother Elizabeth Oliveria Cromwell (1777~1849) who was the last direct descendant of the Protector to bear the name Cromwell, causing her husband, Thomas Artemidorus Russell, to repeatedly apply for permission to take his wife's name. Each petition was vetoed by George III, reportedly with the words, "No, no; no more Cromwells!" Map appears to consist of paper on canvas with wooden hangers covered with marbled paper. Two metal suspension rings to top hanger. The map was executed by the firm of H. The firm existed as Crawter and Sons, Crawter and Moore, Crawter and Death and Crawter and Latta. The map measures 76 x 80cm (roughly 30.5 x 32 inches). Hangers 79cm wide. Weighs 542 grams. The map is discoloured and heavily stained with loss to paper trimming and hanger covering etc. Map coming away from top suspender. Otherwise map is complete with no holes or tears etc. 'HEREFORD ESTATES Thruckstone & Didley' written to top hanger and few penciled notes such as 'Bought of Mr. Martin 1829' to map here & there. --- Didley locations include: Broad Croft, Orchard, Shop Garden,Shop Orchard,Ravenseeds Meadow, Alder Plat, Boresland Wood, Didley Bridge Meadow, Kines Leasons, Clover and Barham's Plock, Shags Grove, Bonny Sweet Robin, First 3 days Marth, Second 3 days Marth, Wallditch meadow & Whitewood's long Mead. Names include: Mary Rudge, John Rudge, James Rudge, Thomas Haynes, Mr. Pritchard, Mr. Goland, Mrs. Edwards, Mr. Swinnerton, Thomas Jones, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Broad, Mr. Croom, Edward Bolton Clive*, Messrs Preece, Rev. H. Wetherall*, Mr. Parry & Mr. Bevan --- *Edward Bolton Clive (c. 1765 - 22 July 1845) was a British Whig politician and was the son of George Clive and Sidney, daughter of Thomas Bolton. He was High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1802 and then sat as Member of Parliament for Hereford between 1826 and 1845. Married the Hon. Harriet, daughter of Andrew Archer, 2nd Baron Archer, in 1790. They had several children, including George Clive and Reverend Archer Clive, grandfather of Sir Robert Clive. Clive died in July 1845. --- The Ven. Henry Wetherell was Archdeacon of Hereford from 1825 to 1852. Born in 1775, he was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow at University College, Oxford in 1802 and was Chaplain to the Duke of Kent until 1820. He held incumbencies at Thruxton, Kentchurch and Kingstone. He died on 23 December 1857.
