Folio, pp. [2], 21 (i.e., 19), [1]; pages 18 and 19 misnumbered 20 and 21; uncut; Latin and English on opposite pages; factotum initials; 20th-century calf-backed plum paper-covered boards, with Abdy arms in gilt at center, gilt title direct on spine, Abdy crest at foot; nice copy. Abdy in question is Sir Robert Abdy Baronet of Albyns in Essex. The publication date was originally intended to be 1 November 1737 (Straus, Dodsley, p. 318), hence the date on the title-page, but publication was delayed until 7 March 1738. Foxon notes that the poem was entered to Dodsley by Cooper in the Stationers' Digest on 6 March, and Pope seems to have had his copies entered there a day or two before publication. Apparently, because of the misnumbering of the last two pages in this first edition, all but sheet E and part of F was reset and the work was reissued, but with the misprint '[Pric 1s.]' introduced at the foot of the title. Mills College Check List 549; not in Riedel-Horatiana. Griffith 480; Foxon P-877; Rothschild 1640.
