First volume of 12 issues, from October, 1871 - September of 1872, of this short-lived periodical from the important Freemasonry author, Albert D. Mackey (1807-1881). Mackey had his editorial hand in several periodicals of the time, and this one ran through at least 1874, perhaps only in 3 volumes. A quote from theMichigan Freemasonin 1872 extolls the virtues of Mackey's publication: "Such a magazine as 'Mackey's National Freemason' will do more to educate the ignorant than the Craft can at first realize. It will dispense light to the needy, and refresh every thirsty Mason who is seeking truth. It is a fountain of knowledge, where all can slack [sic] their thirst. As it breaks the dark clouds of ignorance, it also dries up the corrupting influences that make crime in Masonry. Ignorance and crime are synonymous terms. It lays them both in one grave, side by side.Requiescant in pace." OCLC cites 5 holdings for any issues/volumes, and this one owned by a prominent mason from New Orleans. Bound volume of issues, 8vo, 672pp. Contemporary 1/2 sheep over blue marbled boards, lettered and ruled in gilt, page edges mottled. Specially bound for Samuel M. Todd, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. Boards rubbed and worn, but sound, pages lightly toned. Very good
