DESCEIPTION: Small folio 15 x 9 1/2 inches (38.2 x 24 cm), 72 pp. Limited edition no. 83 of 400 standard copies, total edition of 450. Poems selected by M. Wynn Thomas who wrote an introduction and notes on the individual poems at the end of the book. Bound in quarter navy blue leather with blind red spine titling, red ruling, grey hand-made Ingres paper-covered boards titled on the front cover with blind script. Set in 14pt. Monotype Baskerville and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. Illustrated with eight large full page color wood engravings by Gaylord Schanilec printed directly from the original wood blocks. Title page printed in pink flowing script and black. CONDITION; Slight fading /toning around the periphery of the paper-covered boards. This is a feature inherent in the hand-made paper (not sun-fading) and it is seen in numerous other copies offered for sale. Leather spine perfect without rubbing or fading. No markings, names, ex-libris, etc. All text pages and illustrations in fine condition. DISCUSSION: These moving poems were based upon Walt Whitman's observations and experiences in the American Civil War. The Gwasg Gregynog Press was a Welsh revival of the fine letterpress tradition of the Gregynog Press of the 1930's. Gaylord Schanilec is the foremost artist in creating and printing color wood engravings. This edition is a beautiful presentation of Walt Whitman's poetry.
