A landmark in 19th-century dental literature, this is the first part of the first edition of Carabelliâ s monumental Systematisches Handbuch der Zahnheilkunde, among the earliest comprehensive German-language treatises devoted exclusively to dental science. Carabelli (1787â "1842), who served as Professor of Dental Surgery at the University of Vienna and personal dentist to Emperor Franz I, sought to elevate dentistry from a mechanical trade to a medical discipline. The work opens with a â Geschichtliche à bersicht der Zahnheilkundeâ (Historical Overview of Dentistry), tracing developments from antiquity through the early modern period, referencing classical authors, Renaissance treatises, and 18th-century advances in oral surgery. The book includes detailed discussions on pathology, operative procedures, dental prostheses, and Carabelliâ s critical review of predecessors such as Fauchard, Hunter, and Jourdain. This publication established Carabelliâ s scholarly reputation and laid the foundation for the full Handbuch, a multi-volume set that remained unfinished at his death. Carabelli is best known today for identifying the â tubercle of Carabelli,â a morphological feature of the upper molars, but this text reveals his broader scientific ambitions to create a systematic, anatomy-based dental curriculum for Central Europe. The work is cited in both Weinbergerâ s History of Dentistry (vol. II, p. 322-323) and Gueriniâ s History of Dentistry (p. 280-281) as a cornerstone of early dental pedagogy. Rarely found in its original paper issue as here. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in original printed blue-gray paper wrappers with decorative frame borders, spine titled in letterpress (â v. Carabelliâ s Handbuch der Zahnheilkunde. Ersten Bandes, Erste Abtheilungâ ). Uncut and largely unopened, retaining publisherâ s ads on inner wrappers. Pages show scattered foxing, some browning to preliminaries, and mild wear to spine ends, but internally complete and crisp, with generous margins. A remarkable survival in original boards. Overall- good.
