In the fall of 1865, Sidney Andrews traveled throughout much of the South to observe their early Reconstruction progress. He ultimately published a scathing assessment of the region, with extensive commentary on limited education, constant racial tensions, and unwavering anti-Union sentiments. His reports ultimately served to galvanize Radical Republicans, many of whom believed that the Johnson Administration was not being forceful or aggressive enough in Reconstruction.
