First US edition of the first Jeeves novel. The story was initially serialized in the British Strand Magazine in the UK from August 1933 to February 1934, and in the American Cosmopolitan Magazine from January to June 1934. The novel was received well in contemporary reviews, John Chamberlain writing for The New York Times notes that "at the bottom of Mr. Wodehouse's genius is an ability to make his consonants dance, pirouette, leap, roll over, and play dead." McIlvaine A51b. John Chamberlain, The New York Times, 23 April 1934. Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black, front cover with illustration of Jeeves in black. With dust jacket. Spine ends bumped and sunned, spot of wear to one lower corner; jacket spine toned, pale damp stain to foot, edges rubbed and slightly chipped, 5.5 cm and shorter splits to front flap fold, still holding, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
