[Latino, Mexico, Chicano][Comics] Leyendas de América. México, D.F.: Editorial Novaro, 1959-1968. Five issues. Color-illustrated comic booklets, printed wrappers, each approximately 10.25" x 7". Text in Spanish. Archive includes: [1] El Domador y la Fiera; [2] Las Espuelas Prodigiosas; [3] Trece a la Mesa; [4]El Niño Trovador;[5] Tepoztón: El Dios Niño Prehispánico. A vibrant mid-century archive of Leyendas de América, a Spanish language comic series adapting legends, myths, and folktales drawn from the diverse cultures of the Americas and reinterpreted through vivid graphic storytelling approved by Mexico s Secretaría de Educación Pública for youth readership. The series sought to blend entertainment with moral and educational purpose, introducing readers to regional folklore while reinforcing ideals of unity and cultural pride. Titles such as El Domador y la Fiera ("The Tamer and the Beast") and Tepoztón: El Dios Niño Prehispánico celebrate national and Indigenous mythologies, while Las Espuelas Prodigiosas (a Brazilian legend) and El Niño Trovador (a medieval European tale) reflect Novaro s pan-American humanist scope. Trece a la Mesa, which takes place in Guayaquil, Ecuador, recounts a tale of thirteen dining together,a common bad luck superstition stemming from the Last Supper in Christian myth. Stories are prefaced by contextual essays such as "Una Leyenda Humorística" and "Luces Bajo la Tierra," situating each fable within historical or ethnographic commentary. These issues exemplify the socially constructive mission of mid-century Mexican popular media, which sought to educate working-class readers through accessible visual culture. Mild toning and wear to wrappers, small corner creases, light chipping to spines. Interiors bright and fully legible with strong color saturation. Damage to bottom margin of "El Nino Trovador" affecting covers and inner pages, but not text or illustrations. Overall good to very good condition. A scarce grouping of Leyendas de América, an educational comic series teaching youth and working class readers about Latin American legends and folklore.
