Condition: Books VG / DJs Gd // Box Fair. 1st Printings of the original 4-Volume boxed set of novellas, in remarkable and collectible condition for their age; endpapers, pastedowns and book labels contain period illustrations by renown artist Edward C. Caswell. Unless otherwise noted, each Volume is straight, square, tightly bound, moderately and uniformly age toned and, except for prior Bookshop sticker discreetly pasted to inside corner of rear pastedowns and bump to spine of False Dawn mildly extending into gutter corner of pp125-143, free of all other markings and blemishes. Covers are clean and bright, with sharp corners (other than mild bumping to top corners of front board to False Dawn and The Old Maid), minor bumping to joints and headcaps, moderate bumping to tails (which, for False Dawn, extends 1" up the spine), and straight spines, hinges and edges; lettering and illustration on spine and front board book labels are boldly legible and crisply distinct. Dust Jackets are unclipped (each reflecting original USD $1.25 per-Volume and $5 set price) and moderately age toned, with some minor rubbing along corners, hinges and wraps, minor bumping along the top edges, mild bumping and moderate chipping to the joints, head and tail (1/2" loss at tail of False Dawn). Slipcase is fragile and brittle, with wear along the joints, tape repairing and reinforcing at the top opening, 1" loss from chipping at top corner of opening, but remains sufficiently sturdy to provide protection to the Volumes and their DJs, and with still-bright illustration and legible lettering.
