Inscribed by Bradbury: "Ray Bradbury - Received this first edition copy of Swedish '451' - April 11, '58." Publisher's white paper wrappers printed in black and red. Spine somewhat foxed. Corners crinkled. Toning to first and last page, otherwise very clean. A Very Good, unopened copy of an unusual inscribed Bradbury item. Bradbury s most famous work, Fahrenheit 451 (1953) imagines a dystopian future where books are banned and burned. The novel appears on the New York Public Library s list of books of the century and won the 1954 American Academy of Letters Award in Arts and Literature. Though the book is thought to be a comment on the political culture and McCarthyism at the time of its publication, the work also grew out of a number of ideas and themes Bradbury had explored in a few of his earlier published short stories (including "The Fireman," the novella that laid the groundwork for the novel). The book would later be adapted into a 1966 film directed by Francois Truffaut, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In a contemporary review in The Chicago Sunday Tribune, writer August Derleth called the book "a savage and shockingly prophetic view of one possible future way of life compelling." Dozens of translated editions of Fahrenheit 451 have been published since it was released in its first American edition in 1953 and its first British edition in 1954. Editions in French and Danish (as 233 Celsius) were published in 1955, with Italian and Portuguese editions following in 1956, and this Swedish edition in 1958. This was Bradbury's personal copy, sent to him by the Swedish publisher shortly following publication. Very Good.
