This edition of The History of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes features the celebrated illustrations of Gustave Doré. Revered as the first modern novel, the story of the knight-errant Don Quixote and his earthly squire Sancho Panza has been hailed one of the most influential texts in Western literature. The narrative follows the duo through their absurd adventures of jousting windmills and fighting perceived brigands across Spain, playing themes of disillusionment and idealistic imagination against each other. The story is accompanied by over 100 of Doré's iconic engravings that have often been referenced as the best visual interpretations of the tale to date. The translation was completed by J.W. Clark, with an introductory biographical notice by T. Teignmouth Shore. Quarto (4to), single volume. Good condition; decorative green cloth binding is secure, with some staining and rubbing to edges and boards, particularly at the corners and bottom of the spine, while the pages are clean and complete with minimal toning. Collation: xxii, 480 pp. Illustrations: Over 100 engravings including frontispiece. Edition: P.F. Collier, New York, [c.1880]. #31143 PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
