This Samuel Rogers (1730-90), not to be confused with the banker-poet, was educated at Cambridge and became chaplain to Lord Spencer, resulting also in various benefices in the Althorpe area, latterly at Husbands Bosworth. The collection was issued by subscription, and is prefaced by a long list, with the names including Samuel Johnson. Other friends and acquaintances of Johnson's on the list are Daniel Lysons, Arthur Murphy and William Woty. Eddy & Fleeman, Preliminary Handlist, 55. Provenance. Ownership inscription of Wad. Locke, Devizes. This is clearly the Wadham Locke of Devizes, Wilts, whose name is in the subscription list.
