A contemporary review noted that "For some time now Roald Dahl has been the most popular living novelist that we have for children, despite, or sometimes possibly because of, lapses in taste. George's Marvellous Medicine is a good example of this ability he has to entertain the young often at the cost of offending many of the other sort" (Times Literary Supplement).
