Diced calf boards with double-gilt stamped borders around front and back panel edges Dentelles on outermost board edges and along inside edges of front and back boards. Five panels on spine with fine gilt-stamped edgings and letters; blind-stamped decorations. All external page edges are orange and dark blue marbled, as are the endpapers. Fore-edge corners are rubbed through. Outermost board edges (which are dentelled) are scuffed but primarily intact. Two small areas on Vol II - the upper back edge and back fore-edge, are rubbed. Same bookplate on front paste-downs. Very clean internally and with snug text blocks. Vol I: xv - [xxvi], 1-436pp, Supplement and General Index xxx. Vol I contains the Plate list for both volumes. There are 12 plates listed for Vol I. The frontispiece for Vol I is listed as Grey-street; this plate is seen at page 366. The actual frontispiece in Vol I is The Regeneration of the Heart; Primaticcio; it is listed as being a plate in Vol II at page 773. Of the 12 plates listed all but 10 have tissue-guards. There are numerous additional in-text illustrations, of which 18 also have tissue-guards. There is a slight blip in pagination at page 452: The next three pages are numbered 449 (s/b 453), 450 (s/b 454) and 455. The text flows naturally. Vol II: (6) 437-1090pp. Thirty plates are listed for Vol II, 18 have tissue-guards. Of the numerous in-text illustrations, 22 have tissue-guards.
