The impressively illustrated first edition of Thomas H. Shephard's collection of engraved views of Edinburgh and Scotland, in a handsome half calf binding. The first edition of this beautifully illustrated study of Edinburgh and Scotland from Thomas H. Shepherd.Illustrated with an engraved title page, and eighty-eight engraved plates, each of which displays two views making the complete 176 views.Shepherd was a topographical watercolourist and was well known for his architectural paintings. He illustrated many books including 'Metropolitan Improvements: London in the Nineteenth Century' and 'Bath and Bristol, With Counties of Somerset and Gloucester'.With an introduction and notes on each plate by John Britton, an antiquary, author and editor. He is known for his many books on architecture as at his time of writing popular topography was virtually unknown. Many saw him as ahead of his time when it came to these publications. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strip. Light rubbing to front joint and back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinge strained but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Foxing to engraved title page, with pages otherwise bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot. Very Good
