DESCRIPTION: Large quarto (4t0) 12 3/4 x 9 inches (325 x 228 mm), 64 pp. Limited edition, no. 164 of 225 copies. Hardcover, fine mustard cloth over boards with blind-stamped title in stylized lettering on front cover. Endpapers and slipcase covered in French patterned paper, slipcase made by John DeMerritt. Printed letterpress in three colors on mould-made Somerset paper made at the St. Cuthberts Mill in Great Britain. Composed in the Garamond types by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Illustrated with nine full page drawing collages and several small vignettes by Ward Schumaker, printed at the Press from photopolymer plates. Book is protected with an archival, clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. Publisher's illustrated postcard prosepctus laid in. Housed in a paper covered slipcase with design by the illustrator. With an afterward by Alice Waters, the famous chef who founded Chez Panisse in Berkeley (1971), a groundbreaking restaurant that emphasized use of locally grown fresh, seasonal ingredients and the farm-to-table movement. Signed by Waters and the illustrators (Schumaker) in the colophon. CONDITION: Both book and slipcase are in very fine ("as new" ) condition, No issues whatsoever. DISCUSSION: This edition is a classic in the culiary and food writing genre, M. F. K. Fisher's memoir of "her daily adventures in pursuit of good food in southern France." Pioneering California restauranteur Alice Waters wrote a moving tribute to Fisher in her afterword. The illustrations by Ward Schumaker are playful and evocative.
