THE HISTORY OF ROME BY TITUS LIVIUS 4 VOLUMES 1854 ALL LEATHER GOOD. Please find on offer here a vintage four volume set in leather of: The History of Rome by Titus Livius, translated with notes and illustrations by D. Spillan, Cyrus Edmonds & William A. M DeVitte. These four small hard cover books (4 ¾ x 7 ¼ inches, to 558, to 1087, to 1654, & to 2278) were published by Henry G. Bohn of London, with various dates noted on the title pages (in order): 1854, 1854, 1850, & 1850. They are bound in a dark finished leather with gilt framing to the boards and five raised bands and paste-down title labels on the spine. Although the title page of Volume I says that this set includes illustrations, the only one I found is a tissue-guarded portrait of Titus Livius as the Frontispiece of Volume I. The endpapers and the page edges are all nicely marbled. Condition: This set is in good condition only. The rear board of Volume I is detached but present; the cover of Volume II is barely attached. All the others are still well attached although most of the exterior hinges are cracked. The boards are slightly bumped and there is some sign mildew tracts on the upper left-hand quadrant of the front covers of Volumes I & III. The spine labels are mostly intact despite the fact that the spines are dry and cracked. Inside, there are a few instances of light penciled bookseller s numbers but nothing else very major. The early and late pages in each volume show some very light and occasional foxing which does not extend into the books themselves. Surprisingly, despite the loose board, the interior hinges are not cracked, and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
